MyKana

Privacy Policy

Effective October 27, 2026

MyKana is an Android app for learning to read and write hiragana and katakana, made by Haruma Studio. This policy explains what the app stores, where, and how you can delete it.

In short: without an account, everything stays on your phone. If you sign in with Google, your study progress is stored in your MyKana account so it can sync between your devices. If the app crashes, it sends a crash report so the problem can be fixed, and it shares a few usage stats, such as finishing a first lesson, so we can see what brings learners to MyKana (you can turn either off). MyKana shows no ads, never uses your advertising ID, and never sells your data.

Without an account

Your progress (which characters you have learned, your review schedule, your answers and mistakes) and your settings are stored only on your phone. Nothing is sent anywhere, except crash reports and usage stats (see below).

If you use Back up progress, the app saves a file wherever you choose (for example your Downloads folder or Google Drive). That file is yours; MyKana doesn't keep a copy.

With an account (Sign in with Google)

Signing in is optional. When you sign in, MyKana stores:

This is used only to sync your progress between your devices. Your settings (theme, font, voice and so on) are not uploaded.

Crash reports

If MyKana crashes, it sends a crash report through Firebase Crashlytics: what went wrong in the app's code, the app version, your device model and Android version, the time, and a random ID for the app install. Reports don't include your progress, your account or your name, and they are used only to find and fix bugs. Google keeps them for 90 days. You can turn crash reports off in Settings → Your data → Send crash reports.

Usage stats

MyKana uses Google Analytics for Firebase to count a few steps people reach after installing: opening the app for the first time, using it, finishing a first lesson, a first review session or a placement test, and buying Premium. With each it sends your device model, Android version, app version, country (worked out from your network, not your location) and a random ID for the app install. It doesn't send which characters you study, your answers, your progress, your name or your account, and it never reads your advertising ID.

We use these counts to see whether people find and keep using MyKana, including people who come from our Google Ads campaigns, which Google measures with them. They are never used to show you personalized ads. Google keeps the data tied to the install ID for 2 months. You can turn usage stats off in Settings → Your data → Share usage stats; turning them off also clears what was stored on your phone.

Feedback

If you use Send feedback in the app, your message is sent to us together with the app version, the kind of build, your device model and Android version, whether you are signed in and whether you have Premium, and the random install ID. If you are signed in, your account's email address goes with it so we can reply. Feedback is stored in Firebase and emailed to us, used only to answer you and improve MyKana, and deleted on request.

Where it is stored

Account data is stored with Google Firebase (Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore), in Google's asia-southeast1 (Singapore) region. Google processes it on MyKana's behalf under the Firebase data processing terms. Data is encrypted in transit, and security rules allow each signed-in user to read and write only their own progress.

Sharing

MyKana does not sell your data or share it with anyone, except Google as the service provider above (including Google Ads measuring our ad campaigns from usage stats), or when required by law.

How long it is kept

Your account data is kept until you delete your account. Signing out does not delete it: it stays in your account so you can sign in again later. Signing out clears the progress from that phone.

Deleting your account and data

Progress stored only on your phone is deleted when you uninstall the app or use Reset all progress.

Deleting your progress but keeping your account

In MyKana, open Settings → Your data → Reset all progress and confirm twice. When you're signed in, this deletes, from your phone and from your account right away:

It keeps your account (your Google name, email address and account ID), your Premium purchase, and this phone's settings. Feedback messages you sent are kept until you ask us to delete them by email. To delete everything, delete your account as described above.

Children

MyKana is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date.
